Do you… ?
- Feel an intense urge to pull out your hair?
What is Trichotillomania?
Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder where there is a compulsive urge to pull out hair. The condition can lead to significant hair loss and distress. Hair might be pulled from the head or other areas such as eyebrows or eyelashes.
How common is it?
Trichotillomania affects 1-4% of people in the general population.
What can I do about it?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and/or medication may help you to better manage your trichotillomania. Depending on your circumstances, you may benefit from one of these types of treatment or a combination.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Trichotillomania can successfully be treated using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and in particular using techniques such as habit reversal training. Individual CBT involves identifying your thoughts and actions, and with the help of your therapist, considering alternatives.
